Hello to my favorite denizens of Montclair - I applaud you on this endeavor!
It completely makes sense you two would combine these important elements of who you are. Next you will need to blog the music and food you eat while on the way to, and wander on, the many hiking trails you visit.
So in the spirit of new beginnings I am issuing you a challenge: Consider this music - the soundtrack to the movie "Babies" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8eZdVYgmOY
Sufjan Stevens trailer music aside, the rest of the soundtrack is by Bruno Coulais - and it's amazing. (he also did the soundtracks for the documentaries Ocean and Winged Migration)
As you know, our son Quinn - who's 9 months old as of yesterday - is the center of our universe over here. Hence, my interest in the Babies soundtrack I'm sure! So that's the MUSIC side of the challenge: make and post something inspired by the mellow, rounded, yet upbeat soundtrack.
The second part of the challenge is to consider that Quinn, being 100% mommy-milk fed until very recently, has some serious food allergies. So his mom (uh, that's me...) can't eat any of the following things: Gluten, Soy, Dairy, or Nuts.
If I slip up, the food gets cross contaminated at a well-meaning restaurant, or I just don't realize there's an errant ingredient in something, our little man suffers terrible itchy red rashes that go all over his face, body and extremities. And believe me, it ain't easy - there are hidden ingredients everywhere! Therefore, a reese's pb cup, no matter how intensely it is calling to me with its peanuts, milk and soy-lecithin laced chocolate (and I'm sure there's wheat in there somewhere), it just isn't worth it.
But as tough as it is, I've been eating this way for almost 6 months and it makes all the difference in the world for him.
So my food portion of the challenge to you is: create something I can eat. Something... yummy!
I will say that rice, corn, beans, potatoes and most gluten-free flours tend to be cool. (I've even made home made corn tortillas from scratch and they're amazing!) Even margarines have both dairy and soy - so I'm all about olive oil. Yet... there's still so much out there that I've discovered. (J even made me a flourless dark chocolate butterscotch-iced cake for my birthday!) So... it can be done!
Good luck, good eats, and sending love from Sue, Jonathan and Quinn!
